From Fragmentation to Integration: Fordham's Comprehensive Digital Transformation

institutional profile

Established in 1841, Fordham University is the oldest Catholic and Jesuit university in the northeastern United States. Fordham enrolls approximately 15,300 students from more than 65 countries, and is composed of ten constituent colleges, four of which are undergraduate, and six are postgraduate. The university spans three campuses in southern New York, as well as an abroad center in London, and field offices in Spain and South Africa.

Challenge

Fordham University faced a critical juncture in its digital ecosystem. As technology rapidly evolved and student expectations shifted, the university found itself grappling with several interconnected challenges:

  • Data Silos and Fragmentation: Despite the abundance of real-time data from smartphones, connected devices, and mobile commerce, Fordham struggled to integrate and leverage this information effectively. Data often remained trapped in disparate systems, hindering a holistic view of student experiences and operational efficiencies.
  • Outdated Technology Infrastructure: The university’s existing systems were not equipped to handle the volume, velocity, and variety of data generated by modern digital interactions. This limited Fordham’s ability to respond swiftly to changing needs and opportunities.
  • Lack of Agility in Decision-Making: Without real-time insights, university administrators and faculty often relied on outdated or incomplete information, leading to delayed responses to student needs and inefficient resource allocation.
  • Inconsistent User Experience: Students, faculty, and staff increasingly expected seamless, personalized digital experiences akin to those in the consumer world. Fordham’s fragmented digital landscape fell short of meeting these expectations, potentially impacting satisfaction and engagement.
  • Inefficient Operations: Manual processes and lack of automation in various administrative and academic functions led to unnecessary delays, errors, and resource drain, impacting overall institutional effectiveness.
  • Difficulty in Scaling Services: As the university grew and diversified its offerings, the limitations of its existing digital infrastructure made it challenging to scale services efficiently and introduce new, innovative programs.
  • Security and Compliance Concerns: The increasing volume of digital interactions and data raised new challenges in ensuring data privacy, security, and compliance with evolving regulations.

Fordham University recognized that addressing these challenges was crucial not only for operational efficiency but also for maintaining its competitive edge in higher education. The institution needed a comprehensive digital transformation strategy that would align its technological capabilities with its educational mission, leveraging real-time data and modern technologies to enhance decision-making, improve services, and ultimately provide a superior experience for its entire community.

Solution

One key element of Fordham University’s digital transformation strategy was the alignment and leveraging of real-time data (smartphones, connected devices, mobile commerce) with modern technologies (cloud, AI, etc.). These associated projects were to provide Fordham the agility to make data driven decisions to improve efficiencies and enhance services for students, faculty, and staff.

These strategic projects required significant skilled technical resources, and the university found it challenging to free up current resources due to the competitive landscape. Instead of delaying important projects, the university partnered with SIG to provide managed services to support their specific IT needs.
