Banner 9 Training Services

SIG offers customized solutions for training and implementation support for Banner 9 applications including:

Banner 9 Applications with Page Builder – Introductory Training

Banner 9 Training session

This training will cover most of the features and capabilities of Banner 9 Page Builder through examples and hands-on exercises. This training is a great way to get started with Page Builder, or for developers, enhance your techniques for making pages more sophisticated.

We also provide suggested standards and convention for consistent pages. As time allows, we will start developing one of the institutions custom SSB pages.

We can optionally provide information of using Page Builder to create templates for Action Item Processing.

Maximum Participants: 8 when delivered onsite; 4 when delivered remote.

(If there are additional attendees, an additional consultant will need to be assigned or additional sessions scheduled.)

Follow-up: We suggest booking additional time after this session to help developers plan and create the first Page Builder projects at your institution.

Banner 9 Developer Tool Installation Workshop

This is an optional training available for clients that want to learn how to set-up their Admin Page and Self-Service development environment from scratch.

SIG would prefer to provide a Virtual Box Ubuntu image for each developer to use during the Banner 9 Admin Page Extension Tool Training and the Banner 9 Self Service Extension Tool Training, in which case this training is not required.

If developers wish to have the software installed on their individual workstations, then this session is required due to limited time during the specific training sessions.

Maximum Participants: 6 when delivered onsite; 3 when delivered remote.

(If there are additional attendees, an additional consultant will need to be assigned or additional sessions scheduled.)

Banner 9 Admin Page Extension Tool Training

This offering is designed for Banner institutions who would like to utilize extensibility to modify delivered Admin Pages or create new ones. It presents a series of exercises that cover the many common types of extensions made to existing pages and can include an example of creating a new Admin Page from a template.

All extensions are created using the Frames and Foundations plugins for Eclipse. We do not modify the baseline source code delivered by Ellucian, but rather use the source code to create new code which is layered on top of baseline Banner.

The exercises are designed to be applicable to any Banner module and do not require specific module experience.

This training will use Eclipse as part of the toolbox, but the training is not explicitly on the Eclipse software. We will also use Git in the training, but due to limited time, there will not be detailed training about using Git in a variety of scenarios

The training will use a provided Virtual Box Ubuntu image and a local Git repository. If developers need to have the tools installed on their individual workstations, then the Banner 9 Developer Tool Installation Training will be required.

Maximum Participants: 6 when delivered onsite; 3 when delivered remote.

(If there are additional attendees, an additional consultant will need to be assigned or additional sessions scheduled.)

Banner 9 Self Service Configuration Training

This engagement will introduce technical personnel to the various tools and techniques for configuring Banner Self Service applications created using Groovy and Grails.

Topics covered may include:

  • Configure Page Components (CPC)
  • Banner Theme Editor (can include Ellucian Theme Editor cloud version, if provisioned to client)
  • Text Manager (including use with Admin and Self Service)
  • Settings in Admin Banner for Self Service (GORICCR and GUACONF, SOAWSCR if Registration is installed, or GUAINFO if Student or Faculty Self Service is installed)
  • Application Configuration.groovy files
  • Configuring logging using logback
  • User Interface config file for student profile
  • Special configuration needed for Action Item Processing and Banner Communication Management (can include a brief overview of each application for developers, but this is not detailed functional training)

Note: Topics may be adjusted as Ellucian is frequently releasing new or updated tools.

Maximum Participants: 8 when delivered onsite; 4 when delivered remote.

(If there are additional attendees, an additional consultant will need to be assigned or additional sessions scheduled.)

Modifying Banner 9 Self Service Applications Workshop

This training will introduce technical personnel to the tools and techniques for modifying Banner Self Service applications created using Groovy and Grails.

Topics covered may include:

  • The Git workflow for Ellucian Groovy/Grails Applications
  • Running the project from Grails
  • Configuring your project in IntelliJ (requires the client have IntelliJ licensed for all participants)
  • Running the project in IntelliJ
  • Domain Extension Tool
  • Managing Plugin versions and changes
  • Coding exercises where we make changes to an application
  • Packaging the application for deployment

Maximum Participants: 6 when delivered onsite; 3 when delivered remote.

(If there are additional attendees, an additional consultant will need to be assigned or additional sessions scheduled.)

Pre-requisites: We suggest attendees participate in the Banner 9 Applications with Page Builder – Introductory Training (link) and Banner 9 Self Service Configuration Training (link) before this workshop.

Follow-up: We suggest booking additional time after this session to help developers plan and create the first Self Service Application modification projects at the institution. This will require the institution have the Ellucian repositories mirrored and configured with developers having access to clone/pull as well as push to a branch that is not master. In the follow-up workshop, each developer should come with an actual project in mind.

Some topics during this session may include:

  • The development process, emphasizing best practices for Git.
  • Setting up the project based on local repositories.
  • Code review sessions as the projects develop.

Banner 9 Extensibility Tool Overview

When clients are not ready or do not need a full set of trainings, we can present an overview of the Banner Extensibility Tools. This session can be as short as three-hours or as long as 1.5 days and is designed to help a client understand what tools are available with enough depth and detail to understand why they might need a full training session. This will not include any hands-on training but will rely on PowerPoint Presentations and some limited demonstrations if connectivity and time allows.
